After my education, I worked for and with various designers, filmmakers, artists and researchers at research labs for new media technology abroad, such as “Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologien” (ZKM) in Karlsruhe and Art+Com in Berlin. We worked on projects at the cutting edge of interactive technology, in emerging fields such as virtual reality and spatial interaction with 3D software and new media technologies.

I founded Mattmo in 1993, together with Matthijs Tammes. As always at the forefront of change, we built a network in the Chinese market in 2004, one of the first in our field. And in 2008, we opened our office in Shanghai.

As the leading strategist within Mattmo, I advise and inspire organizations and people in the areas of innovation, strategy, creativity, new concepts, brands and design. I like to create innovative concepts that contribute to a sustainable and vital society, on commission or on my own initiative. For example, I was at the foundation of Dutch Cuisine, Creative City Lab, and DutchRoom in Creative China. I often collaborate with think tanks and give lectures and workshops worldwide on creativity, innovation and cultural entrepreneurship.

I think with left and right brain. By this I mean that I bring creative ideas and creativity together, and this is the foundation that has been laid at Mattmo. I believe in the collaboration of minds, especially from different disciplines, to explore what can arise from the overlap of disciplines.

Think of me as a pioneer. I often foresee social change and trends. I like to work at the intersection of change; there are opportunities and new possibilities. My strength is that I always turn possibilities and solutions into tangible ideas, and along the way I always try to inspire people and take them along. Real innovation arises from the overlap of disciplines. That is my path to a vital society.

Give meaning

Amsterdam is our home port, the Netherlands our base camp. Here we received our training, which is among the best in the world, from the Rietveld Academy to the Design Academy. We have been able to settle into a particularly rich cultural climate here from childhood. We were able to copy the art of Rembrandt, Mondriaan, van Gogh, Wim Crouwel, Ootje Oxenaar and you name it. And then do it completely differently. The Dutch are namely quirky and Dutch designers especially.

Our ancestors made the difference centuries ago by reclaiming land from swamp and water. Innovation ‘avant la lettre’. And before the rest of the world knew it in the 16th century, the Netherlands was the most urbanized part of Europe. As a trade hub, it has since been exposed to a flood of foreign influences – fodder for Dutch artists and designers. A century later, the Netherlands became the international focal point of the Enlightenment, thanks to a group of radical Dutch thinkers. They changed our culture forever. Without them, radical artists and designers such as van Gogh, Mondriaan, Rietveld and Koolhaas would never have emerged.

That radical – or as said: idiosyncratic – is in our DNA. How is this reflected in Mattmo? We want to make tangible what is otherwise only vaguely present to map the world around us so that we can navigate through it.

Just as the world-famous Amsterdam cartographer Blaeu in the Golden Age completely overturned the current view of heaven and earth with his terrestrial and celestial globes. Through our work we want to show our clients, target groups and customers the world in new ways. So that we can all ultimately make it a better place.

So give meaning to things. We realize that it may seem pretentious, but we firmly believe in this approach. In daily practice it comes down to going further than where others leave off.

In this regard, our motto is knowledge is power, knowledge is the ability to convert information into high-quality decisions. In the best case, you can translate knowledge into predictions and forecasts about how people, markets or society behave. Our experience shows that sooner or later you discover cross-connections that make a project – from annual report to city marketing – richer and more relevant. That is why we approach every project cross-media, cross-cultural or interdisciplinary, and preferably all three at the same time.

Het bericht Monique Mulder verscheen eerst op Mattmo Creative - Amsterdam.

Matthijs Tammes

Mattmo

Account Director & Project Director Role and background Within Mattmo Creative I mainly take on the roles of project and account management. I manage the annual report projects in terms of process and technology. And last but not least, I oversee the further development of ART, our Advanced Reporting Tool.

My education includes TU Delft and the Master program Brand Management at the EURIB (European Institute for Brand Management). After working at NMB (later ING), Monique and I founded Mattmo in 1993. Initially, Monique was involved in the creation of concepts and designs and I took care of the account and project management side of the company. I think our success was largely due to our differences in background, network and expertise, so we complemented each other. In more than 20 years, Mattmo has developed into a full-service strategic brand communication and design agency.

Personal information

I was born and raised in The Hague and still live there. Wonderfully located in the center of the city, close to all restaurants and cafes. At the weekend I go racing cycling with my friend and coach my daughter’s hockey team.

Are designers and concept creators usually from the inside out; I’m more of an from-the-outside-in man, always making sure I’m up to date with current events in the business world and financial markets. No surprise that my strengths lie mainly on the business side of our creative organization. I am aware of how small and corporate organizations operate, which is why I sense what customers need in projects – sometimes even if they don’t see this yet. I am also a sparring partner for everything related to strategy at Mattmo. Thinking with a critical eye, ensuring that there are no gaps and thus adding value and strengthening strategic plans.

At the same time, I understand graphic and technical designers. I also enjoy directing them, providing counterbalance and occasionally giving them a reality check, because I understand how they think.

In that respect, Mattmo is a fantastic company, where we have created and continue to create beautiful projects over the years.

Het bericht Matthijs Tammes verscheen eerst op Mattmo Creative - Amsterdam.

Paul van Ravestein

Mattmo

Creative Director background My name is Paul van Ravestein. As Creative Director I am responsible for all visual output. I manage the designers and initiate the visually creative part of our projects. Together with Monique Mulder, I form the creative heart of Mattmo. Think of me as the bridge between strategy and the translation to the visual part of our projects. My pragmatic approach provides a balance between the two fields.

I think medium-independently and therefore also work as a film director or art director on photo shoots, and I continue to work on occasionally sketching the impetus for visual identities or spatial concepts.

I was born curious and started traveling as soon as I could.

Investigate what is on the other side of the horizon, see, feel and experience it with your own eyes. I like to do research, that feeds my creativity. I always delve into backgrounds, history and visual research. Call it visual anthropological curiosity. That context gives me more insight. The book “De Zure Stad” is a good example of this.

I like to find out how they think and who they really are – so I can serve them from pure empathy. This gives me the inspiration to express them visually. That’s where the conceptual layers arise. And so I can bring something unique to every project.

In 1989 I started at the Maastricht Art Academy, a romantic city, as un-Dutch as you can imagine. I chose agencies in Lisbon and London for my internships, because I could explore my limits there. After graduating, I started my working life for Kenmerk, a journalistic news program for IKON in Hilversum. That’s where I created my very first website – that was in 1995. After that I wandered around looking for the design agency that suited me. I found that in Mattmo, and I have been working there since 1996.

I TOUCH PEOPLE’S IMAGINATION

Growing up, I competed in athletics: I’m a natural sprinter. That side of me is also in my work. I have a no-nonsense sports mentality when it comes to speed in creation, that speed ensures that designs remain dynamic and spontaneous. I get satisfaction from switching between completely different projects and from one medium to another.

Suzie Felix

Mattmo

Strategy & Projectmanagement

Het bericht Suzie Felix verscheen eerst op Mattmo Creative - Amsterdam.

Strategy & Projectmanagement

Het bericht Suzie Felix verscheen eerst op Mattmo Creative - Amsterdam.

Tjerk de Wit

Mattmo

Sales Tjerk graduated in business economics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
